The Magic of Tea
I am not a coffee girl, I’ve always been a tea drinker. Someone once asked me why I love tea so much. I always answered it’s because I’m Asian —I drank tea even before breast milk. But truthfully, it was the first thing I tasted as I was borne from my mother’s womb, and once it touched my lips, I understood fate.
I understood it too late; I couldn’t prevent fate. It had cast a spell on me, giving me undying thirst. Once that drop of pure liquid heaven touched my lips, it had damned me to an eternal journey. A quest to find more of its kind, more meetings with other spell-bound tea drinkers, more fearsome battles with my wallet, always emerging victorious, as nothing can ever stop me from my quest for more of its kindred. I am forever spell-bound, a lost soul without it, only ever feeling complete in a tea shop, or at my desk, or anywhere with my tea press. Cursed with continuously exploring what other brews the gods has to offer in this little world of mine.
All joking aside, I’ve always been a tea girl, even before we came to Canada. In Thailand (yes, I was born in a Thailand refugee camp and was only able to visit my native soil during my teenage years), my mom would always brew me refreshing cold tea in the afternoon and hot tea at night. More than an obsession, it became a habit, so I started experimenting to find the best types of tea. I’ve tried bagged tea, premium loose tea, all types of black tea, sweet tea, and soon realize that there wouldn’t ever be the best type of tea for me, as I love them all depending on the time, place and its pairing.
For example, I love Earl Grey. A strong breakfast tea much like English Breakfast. It’s got a dark earthy kick and is usually accompanied by a caffeine boost that wakes me right up. During the day, I usually prefer something milder, but flavourful such as Sencha or Genmaicha. And when I’m feeling sick, I would make my own herbal tea blend from fresh ingredients such as lemongrass, ginger, and turmeric, usually steeping it with loose leaf tea. My favourite loose leaf at the moment is green tea and its many varieties. Green tea is packed with antioxidants, more so than any other tea, and due to its genteel and delicate flavour, it mixes well with many other ingredients to make a great tasting detox tea without being monotonous.
Lately, I’ve been experimenting with many detox drinks to find something soothing, healthy and full of flavour as a morning staple. So, this morning detox tea made of green tea, lemon and ginger have been a new welcomed addition to my wake-up routine. I love that it has no caffeine yet is just as stimulating —It’s great in the morning as well as throughout the day.
Lemon And Ginger Tea Benefits
Before getting to the recipe, let’s talk about green tea, ginger, lemon and peppermint for a moment. All of which holds amazing healing benefits…
Green Tea Benefit in Detox Drinks
I may not be a coffee girl, but I can still enjoy the caffeine buzz from another source: green tea also provides it but in a more stable form. A standard 8-ounce cup of coffee contains approximately 100-200 mg of caffeine, while an 8-ounce cup of green tea contains 25-45 mg. Therefore, green tea will give you the caffeine buzz you are looking for without the jitteriness and potential blood sugar imbalances that accompany higher levels of caffeine intakes. Although if you’re looking for the buzz, you would need to drink at least three cups of green tea to get the same amount of caffeine as one cup of coffee.
Summer has just arrived, the perfect month for morning exercises, so along with your daily runs, a healthy, nutrient-rich diet, the antioxidants in green tea will help to flush toxins from your system while aiding in digestion and keeping you hydrated. There are many benefits to adding green tea detox into your routine. Here are some tips to maximize those benefits:
Choose an organic brand to ensure that you will reap the maximum nutrient benefits available from your green tea. Avoid low-quality brands from China that can actually contain high levels of fluoride.
Drink it while it’s hot, as iced teas tend to be more diluted and less beneficial.
To maximize the benefit of green tea choose green tea loose leaves instead of bags, and pour hot water (before its boiling point, but not boiled) over the leaves. Allow the tea to steep for at least 3 minutes.
“Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if it is the axis on which the world earth revolves – slowly, evenly, without rushing toward the future. Live the actual moment. Only this moment is life.” —Thích Nhất Hạnh

Ginger Benefit in Detox Drinks
Ginger is a star in many popular cleansing programs. It helps to cleanse the body by stimulating digestion and increasing blood circulation, preventing clotting. The most important aspect of ginger in detox is its digestive functions which may serve to enhance the body’s natural cleansing process to better allow it to remove the build-up of toxin and wastes in your liver, colon and other organs. This allows your body to build better defences against illness and disease.
For detox tea, if you love the taste of ginger, it might be preferable to crush it prior to use as ginger root releases more flavour during cooking. Before crushing ginger, choose good quality, fresh ginger. Good quality fresh ginger will release more juice after being crushed, and will also crush more readily. Of course, if you prefer less or a bite, you might want to use grated or sliced ginger for ginger tea detox drink. To get the maximum benefit of ginger in your detox tea, here are some tips:
Look for large, plump, hard ginger roots.
Pick ginger roots sporting the lightest shade of brown, and do not choose gingers that are shrivelled or soft.
Mint Benefit in Detox Drinks
For detoxing drinks, mint leaves add a nice refreshing flavour to your drink. On top of that, it can help you digest more effectively by promoting digestive enzymes, reduces stomach inflammation, soothes nausea and motion sickness. Adding mint to your detox drink in the morning is a great pick me up considering it is a natural stimulant. The invigorating scent of mint, primarily the menthol component, stimulates the hippocampus area of the brain which controls mental clarity, thus improving memory, brain function, and increase alertness. Not to mention, adding a few springs of mint gives your detox tea a cool fresh taste with some additional sweetness.
Lemon Benefit in Detox Drinks
Usually when people speak of detoxing, lemon is always the key ingredient in any detox drinks. That is because vitamin C, which is abundant in lemon, is a natural antioxidant. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals and prevent/delay certain types of cell damage. It is great for boosting our immune system and preventing the occurrence of common colds and flu during the winter months.
However, one of the main reason why it is a staple in detox drinks is that they are alkaline. By drinking lemon juices regularly, you are helping to balance your body’s PH level. When we consume too many processed or refined foods, the PH level in our body becomes unbalanced, tipping more towards the acidic side. We do not want our body to be very acidic as many diseases are known to form in an acidic environment. So it is very important to detox our body with alkaline foods such as whole foods, vegetables or in this case, lemon. Although lemons are acidic on their own, inside our body, they become alkaline as the citric acid does not create acidity in the body once metabolized. Drinking lemon juice regularly ensures the body’s PH level is in balance. To get the maximum benefit of lemon in your detox tea, here are some tips:
Pick lemons that are heavy for its size -hold them in your hand and see which ones weight the most.
Do a scent test, the fragrance should be pleasant. Choose lemons that are bright yellow and little to no wrinkling.
For juicing, thinner-skinned lemon will yield more juice.
Smaller lemons will yield more juices than larger ones.
Make sure the lemon is not too soft and holds no signs of white or green mould.
Lemon & Ginger Morning Detox Drink for Daily Enjoyment, Health and Productivity
When I was much younger and in high school, I was a huge procrastinator. I would leave things to the last minute because I enjoy the high pace struggle when the deadline nears. This, of course, leads me to have a very unbalanced and unhealthy lifestyle as certain days I’m lazily watching the minutes go by while other times, I’m struggling to breathe while trying to accomplish my goals in time.
Now, I am not struggling as much due to my more productive and balanced morning routine. I work on things at my pace with no procrastination, but before all that, I have the perfect morning routine I’ve set for myself: turn off my phone (I hate morning calls), make my morning detox drink, sit on my *ss, enjoy and relax. Once my mind is peaceful and full of clarity, I start working on the things that need to be accomplished for that day.
Immune Boosting Green Tea, Mint, Lemon & Ginger Tea Detox Drink
I regularly drink this Immune Boosting Lemon and Ginger Detox Tea hot throughout the winter months. But I also enjoy it cold during the summer months with my daily morning exercise. Hot or cold, it is a very healthy drink to sip on first thing in the morning.
Lemon and Ginger Tea Recipe
This immune-boosting ginger tea detox drink is one of our favourite detox drink —especially in the morning to clear our mind and boost productivity.
- 1 knob of ginger [ about 6 inches ]
- 1 lemon [ Slice lemon in half. 1 half slice it further into 4 thin slices. Keep other half for later. ]
- 15 - 20 mint leaves
- 2 tbsp green tea loose leaf
- 6 cups of water
- raw honey optional
Peel ginger, crush it lightly and slice it into thinner pieces.
Combine the ginger and mint (I like to muddle the mint a bit while in the saucepan) in a large pot or saucepan with water and bring it to a boil on high heat. Turn the heat to low and let it simmer for 15 minutes.
Remove from heat. Add green tea loose leaf and squeeze 1 half of the lemon in. Let steep for at least 3 minutes.
Strain and serve with slices of lemon and a bit of honey.
This recipe is for a large amount because personally, I like to store this detox drink recipe for all day use —1 cup for sipping in the morning while it's hot, and the rest stored in a large mason jar in the fridge to be used in a water bottle during my morning jogs (letting it cool down and adding a few ice cubes in).
